Down in the big swamps of the Congaree…

The existence of the Congaree National Park is no accident. What is now protected as the largest surviving tract of old growth hardwood bottomland forest was nearly lost before the success of a grassroots movement to save the swamp in 1976. On a Big Swamp Tour, you’ll hear about what makes this underrated national park so special.

Every Big Swamp Tour is led by Josh. As a South Carolina midlands Master Naturalist, a certified Social Studies teacher, and graduate student in education, Josh is a qualified guide who enjoys introducing visitors to Congaree. He grew up in Eastover, a small town in Lower Richland about 10 minutes away from the park, and has been exploring the swamp for years.
